Consultation has concluded
The District of Lunenburg explored the feasibility of creating a food hub that supports local food security. Food Hubs are centralized facilities that connect and network local farmers, producers, the community, and consumers. The goal is to connect local farmers and food producers with people in the community, helping everyone get access to fresh, affordable food while supporting the local economy.
By streamlining the distribution process, the food hub can ensure efficient delivery of fresh, locally sourced food to various outlets, including healthcare facilities, schools, restaurants, retail stores and more.
It's important to note that a Food Hub is NOT a Farmers Market. If you'd like to know more about what a food hub is, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peto7dZp5vY.
This project explored the best way to set up a space where food can be shared and sold, making sure it works well for both the community and local farmers. As part of this project, we undertook surveys of consumers and local food markets to better understand local food consumption patterns. In addition, the local agriculture community has also been surveyed to help identify the local food supply capacity and to highlight supply gaps. You can read the What We Heard Report here.
Third Sector Enhancement provided their Food Hub Feasibility Study to the Policy & Strategy Committee on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Staff provided an accompanying staff report. You can view the presentations and Council discussion on our YouTube channel. At the Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Council meeting, Council decided not to pursue the opportunity of a Food Hub in the District of Lunenburg at this time. If you are a local community group that would like a copy of the research undertaken by Third Sector Enhancement, please email mark.strickland@modl.ca with your request.
