The District of Lunenburg is exploring the feasibility of creating a food hub that supports local food security. Food Hubs are centralized facilities that connect and network local farmers, producers, the community, and consumers. The goal is to connect local farmers and food producers with people in the community, helping everyone get access to fresh, affordable food while supporting the local economy.

By streamlining the distribution process, the food hub can ensure efficient delivery of fresh, locally sourced food to various outlets, including healthcare facilities, schools, restaurants, retail stores and more.

This project will explore the best way to set up a space where food can be shared and sold, making sure it works well for both the community and local farmers. We want to make sure that the hub helps provide healthy food for everyone and creates opportunities for local food producers to grow their businesses.

Want to learn more and share your thoughts? Join us on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30 at the Best Western Bridgewater to learn more about a potential Food Hub. The evening will begin with a presentation of our research, followed by a workshop where we’ll gather your feedback and ideas.

Please RSVP to sarah.kucharski@modl.ca (appreciated, but not required). Can’t make it? You can still share your thoughts online at https://engage.modl.ca/food-hub.

To date, we have undertaken surveys of consumers and local food markets to better understand local food consumption patterns. In addition, the local agriculture community has also been surveyed to help identify the local food supply capacity and to highlight supply gaps. You can read the What We Heard Report here. This survey information will be available as background reports for the project to assess the feasibility of establishing a Food Hub in the District.
