The District of Lunenburg Council has directed staff to develop a Housing Strategy to help address housing availability and affordability across the municipality. The proposed strategy identifies a range of potential municipal actions to support more housing options for residents—through partnerships, policy changes, and local initiatives.

We’re inviting you to take part in Community Conversations to share your thoughts on these proposed actions. Your feedback will help Council understand community priorities and refine the final Housing Strategy. Whether you rent, own, or are searching for housing, your perspective is an important part of shaping how the District supports housing in the years ahead.

Actions to support the private sector include:

  1. Supporting density through planning and policy
  2. Reducing internal barriers to development where they appear
  3. Advocating to other orders of government for policy changes
  4. Establishing a supportive secondary dwelling unit program
  5. Maintaining a flexible approach to partnering with new housing organizations.

Actions to support non-profit organizations include:

  1. Prioritizing non-profit and affordable access to municipal resources (i.e. municipal land via the land bank)
  2. Establish a pre-development funding program, facilitate and support non-profit activity and networking throughout the region
  3. Ensure clarity for proposal regulations and support
  4. Establish incentives for affordable housing providers by mirroring existing property tax exemption programs.
