What kind of accommodation falls under the By-Law?

Accommodation means the provision of one or more rental units or rooms as lodging in hotels and motels and in any other facility required to be registered under the Tourism Accommodation Registration Act and in a building owned or operated by a post-secondary educational institution. This includes hotel and motel rooms, as well as accommodation booked through AirBnB, VRBO, privately, or through similar apps or websites.

When will the By-Law go into effect?

We expect the proposed By-Law will be presented at Council for First Reading in the Spring. The By-Law will go into effect after Second Reading. The implementation date (when accommodation owners must begin collecting and remitting the fee) will be determined at the First or Second Reading. The recommendation being proposed to Council, based on public input, is April 1, 2025.

Where can I read the proposed By-Law?

You can read the proposed By-Law here

How do I register and remit the tax?

These details have not yet been finalized. More information on the details of the program will be provided in 2024. To receive notification when the By-Law is in effect, please sign up for email updates using the Stay Informed widget on this page.

I rent my short-term rental through AirBnB or VRBO. How can I add the fee?

Most major short-term accommodation rental apps and websites offer host booking tools that will allow you to add the fee, and see it broken down in your payment reporting. Please contact your service provider for details on how to add the fee.

What will the revenue collected by the levy be used for?

The Municipality will use the funds to promote the region as a tourism destination.

How can I provide my feedback?

We will be announcing public engagement in late April for early MAy events. Please sign up for the email newsletter under the Stay Informed section to receive a direct email when the public engagement events are announced.
