What’s Happening?

The Municipality is developing an updated Active Transportation Plan (ATP) to continue enhancing active transportation opportunities, expanding the current network, and improving connectivity throughout the Municipality. The updated ATP will identify new priorities, policies, programs, and infrastructure recommendations to improve access to active transportation options for people of all ages and abilities. Through collaboration with community members, the updated ATP will establish a vision for active transportation in MODL and include an implementation strategy that reflects the municipality’s unique context and community priorities. The final ATP will act a guide for active transportation infrastructure investments over the next ten years.

Help us create a plan that reflects the community’s priorities and makes active transportation more accessible for everyone!

What is Active Transportation?

Active transportation is any human-powered mode of transportation, such as walking, cycling, paddling, or using a mobility aid. It describes any active trip you make to get from one place to another, whether it is to work, school, the store, or spending time with family and friends in nature. Other new an emerging transportation modes such as e-bikes and e-scooters can also fit in this category and may use the same trails and pathways.

Active transportation contributes to a more balanced and efficient transportation system and supports more healthy, livable, and vibrant communities. Some of the benefits of active transportation include:

  • Health and Fitness: Creates more physically active communities and promotes psychological well-being.
  • Community Connections: Active transportation encourages social interaction, which helps to build trust, respect, understanding and a sense of co-operation amongst all community members.
  • Safety: Dedicated walking, cycling, and rolling space reduces the risk of injury for all road users, which makes people more comfortable to use active transportation modes.
  • Environmental: More people walking and cycling can help lower emissions while also improving air quality and reducing motor vehicle congestion.
  • Economy and Tourism: Neighbourhoods and destinations that are inviting and accessible via walking or biking can attract more visitors, who will in turn be patrons of local businesses.

Get Involved!

We are excited to design a plan that represents MODL’s unique context and your priorities. To do that, we need your input! We invite you to use your voice to help us understand current active transportation patterns, challenges, and needs.

Our first round of engagement is kicking off September 8, 2023 with an online survey and mapping activity (found below under the “Survey” and “Places” tabs). The focus of this round of engagement is to understand how and where you are currently actively travelling, what prevents you from walking, biking, or rolling more often, and how the municipality can improve active transportation opportunities.
