It establishes measurable targets and coordinated actions across the community and municipal operations to transition toward a low-carbon future.

Council Declaration
In 2019, the Council declared a climate emergency, recognizing the urgent need to reduce emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Net-Zero Goal
Municipality is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Initiatives Under the Climate Action Plan

The following initiatives support the implementation of the Climate Action Plan and advance emission-reduction and resilience goals across the Municipality.

Land Conservation Strategy

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) is developing a Land Conservation Strategy. The Strategy will guide how MODL identifies, stewards, and expands protected natural areas so that nature and people thrive, to conserve 20 percent of municipal lands by 2030

Emergency Preparedness and Climate Change Impacts

Emergency preparedness and understanding climate change impacts are crucial for the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. As climate change continues to affect global weather patterns, coastal communities like Municipality are increasingly vulnerable to various risks.

Hemlock Conservation Project

The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) has been identified in the District of Lunenburg, affecting hemlock trees in the Municipality. The region's rich forests and numerous waterways make it an important area for monitoring and managing HWA, due to the ecological and environmental significance of hemlock trees.

Annual Tree Giveaway

The Annual Tree Giveaway supports climate action by increasing tree canopy across the municipality. Residents are invited to receive native tree species to plant on their properties, helping reduce emissions, improve air quality, and strengthen local biodiversity.

Local Food Security

Local food security ensures communities have reliable access to fresh, nutritious food while supporting local farmers and resilient supply chains. By strengthening local production and distribution, we reduce dependency on distant sources and build sustainable, self-sufficient food systems.

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) is developing a Local Climate Change Action Plan (2021-2030), to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare MODL for the impacts of a changing climate. The Plan is being built around a central vision that MODL will be a low carbon community, with the long-term goal of becoming a sustainable, climate-resilient, and net-zero community. The Plan will identify and prioritize several key action items that will be delivered over the next 10 years. This will be a community plan and we want to hear from residents, farmers, local businesses, community groups and youth on how we can address climate change, and ensure MODL continues to be a great place to live.

Your feedback will help shape our Local Climate Change Action Plan. Please take the next 5-8 minutes to complete this survey.

The deadline to complete this survey is February 28, 2022.
